Work in Progress

This page is dedicated to ongoing projects I have bubbling away on the back burner slowly developing until I declare full capability.

Buffalo Horn Eyewear

Buffalo horn is a by product of the farming industry in Asia, where the buffalo is used to till the land, for meat, milk, its hide for leather its bones used to make glue and its horns used to make utilitarian objects like combs and drinking vessels. It is safe to say that the buffalo is a respected animal for its contribution to the Asian society in which it lives and is treated as one of the family simply because it plays an important role in its life and even after it as no part of it goes to waste.

Working with the buffalo horn has been a challenging journey from start to finish, I still remember the first time I hand cut it and watched it delaminate due to my limited knowledge, however as I continued to hand work the horn I gained a understanding of this wonderful material.

I now condition, press, shape and form buffalo horn in my workshop using a mixture of old traditional methods and new world technology (CNC cutting).

The first major project was the designing and manufacturing of eyewear for myself (age catching up with me), as I could not find the right fit in an off the shelf model.

Using my facial measurements I designed what I call the “Geometric”. It is round in both the left and right eye with the exception on the left it has a few flat edges but still remaining round looking. This was achieved by creating a circular top area with an undercut along the edges for the flat shape. I have been wearing the geometric style frame now for about a year now and have found them really comfortable with no indentations or bruising to my nose caused by ill fitting frames, clearly a made to measure frame for comfort is the way to go. I recently designed the last frame for myself shown in the images below as it is time to change my lenses.
